| | | | Egypt Egypt's Hosni Mubarak was on life support after suffering a stroke in prison Tuesday, deepening the country's uncertainty. The 84-year-old Mubarak suffered a "fast deterioration of his health" and his heart stopped beating. Earlier Tuesday, both candidates in last weekend's presidential election claimed victory. The Muslim Brotherhood, emboldened by its claim that its candidate won the election, sent tens of thousands of supporters into the street in an escalation of its confrontation against the ruling generals who invoked sweeping powers this week that give them dominance over the next president.
Nigeria A radical Islamist sect unleashed multiple attacks in northeastern Nigeria, killing at least 25 people, authorities said Tuesday. The attacks worsened an already tense security situation in Nigeria, a West African nation of more than 160 million people almost evenly divided between Muslims and Christians. The Boko Haram sect began its attacks Monday evening with blasts targeting police and military targets in the city of Damaturu, authorities said. One resident said at least two schools were torched. The violence came a day after Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a trio of deadly church bombings Sunday in the northern state of Kaduna, which, along with ensuing reprisal killings, left at least 70 people dead and over 100 wounded, a rescue official Tuesday.
Israel Gaza Strip militants barraged southern Israel with rocket fire on Wednesday and Israel retaliated with multiple airstrikes, as a brief cease-fire crumbled shortly after it took effect. Six Palestinians, including at least four militants, were killed this week in airstrikes, and several Israelis have been wounded by rocket fire. The Israeli military said 12 rockets were fired by late morning and that Israeli aircraft struck seven targets, shattering a truce the Islamic Jihad militant group had said would go into effect at midnight Tuesday. There were no reports of casualties on either side from the Tuesday morning attacks.

| | | | France A man who took hostages at a French bank in Toulouse demanded to speak to the elite police unit which shot Islamist gunman Mohamed Merah last spring. In March, Merah, who claimed to have al-Qaeda training, killed seven people in Toulouse before he was shot dead by police. The director of the bank, a branch of CIC, is among the hostages. The regional newspaper Ouest-France said the area around the bank was sealed off by the security forces. The BBC's Christian Fraser, in Paris, said the bank is 330 feet from Merah's flat.

Media reports said he might have a cardiovascular problem.
Haiti A new constitution has been published in Haiti, giving some two million citizens living abroad the right to own land and run for public office. President Michel Martelly said it would allow Haitians to hold dual nationality. "This matter was creating division between the diaspora and people here in Haiti," said Martelly. Remittances from Haitians living in the U.S. and Canada have a huge impact on the economy of the Caribbean country. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Americas. Martelly bowed to international pressure and signed the legislation.
Panama President Ricardo Martinelli announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing two controversial bills that spurred disturbances in Panama's National Assembly and protests on the streets. The supermarket magnate attributed opposition to the measures – one authorizing sale of the government's stakes in utility companies and the other a ratification of three Supreme Court appointments – to a lack of information. The National Coordination is a consultative body that includes representatives of business, labor, academia, and other elements of society. Martinelli invited "all sectors" to take part in the discussion and said he will ask the Catholic Church to mediate the talks.
