| | | | Mali Islamist rebels smashed the entrance of a 15th-century Timbuktu mosque, while their Al-Qaeda allies in northern Mali cut off the key city of Gao by planting landmines all around it. In Timbuktu, rebels from the Al-Qaeda-allied Ansar Dine (Defenders of Faith) group continued their destruction of the city's cultural treasures. Some residents sobbed as the Islamists broke down the "sacred door" of one of Timbuktu's three ancient mosques, Sidi Yahya - closed for centuries due to local beliefs that to open it would bring misfortune. The North African Al-Qaeda franchise and its offshoot Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) forced their former MNLA allies out of the city in deadly clashes last week. In Timbuktu, militants from Ansar Dine, who occupied Mali's vast north three months ago, destroyed seven tombs of ancient Muslim saints they consider idolatrous over the weekend.

| | | | India Pilots of national carrier Air India are set to call off their strike after almost two months, reports say. The news came after the Delhi High Court told pilots to return to work within 48 hours. More than 400 pilots have been on strike over a decision to train pilots from Indian Airlines, which merged with Air India in 2007, to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes. Dozens of flights have been cancelled because of the strike, which has entered its 58th day. The airline has already sacked 101 pilots and the High Court had earlier ruled the protest illegal. The court said on Tuesday that the Air India management would "consider sympathetically" the cases of the sacked pilots.
China Chinese officials have halted the construction of a copper alloy plant in Sichuan province following violent protests by local residents. Large crowds gathered on Sunday and Monday in Shifang city to protest against the plant on environmental grounds. Both police and residents were injured in the clashes as bottles were thrown and cars damaged. Officials said they would now consult residents on the project. One woman in Shifang told the BBC that the streets were still "completely chaotic," with the government sending out "lots of armed police and riot police." People were still gathered in front of the city government office, she added.
Indonesia A police station and local youth organization office were allegedly vandalized by members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) on Sunday after the hard-line Islamists were attacked by youths while trying to shut down a dangdut performance in Ciawi, Tasikmalaya, West Java, police said. A brawl broke out between FPI members and the local Karang Taruna youth organization Saturday night. The Islamist organization - known for conducting violent raids on events deemed immoral - tried to shut down a dangdut concert, but were met with resistance from the local youth organization. Local police, stationed in a sub-district office next door, arrested those involved in the brawl. The FPI then allegedly turned on the police and busted the windows out of the police station.

| | | | Russia The opposition will hold anti-Kremlin demonstrations on July 26 and are hoping for a large turnout nationwide and in other countries, an organizer said Monday. "A huge event is planned for July 26: a rally and a march in Moscow, as well as events in other cities," said Sergei Davidis, an organizer and member the opposition Solidarity movement, Interfax reported. "If we can manage it, the event will happen all over the world." He said opposition supporters in several European countries have already expressed interest in staging their own demonstrations. Moscow participants may have to settle for a simple rally, rather than a combined march and rally, because of tough protest rules passed last month, he said.
Norway A strike by offshore workers in Norway's oil sector entered its second week on Sunday with labor unions bracing for a long conflict and possible escalation to further lower output from the eighth largest oil exporter. Operator Statoil said the strike had cut production of oil and natural gas liquids by 230,000 to 250,000 barrels per day, or up to 13 percent of Norway's capacity. Some natural gas output has also been affected. Unions representing about 7,000 offshore workers on the Norwegian continental shelf, decided on Friday to refrain from escalating the strike to avoid intervention by the government, and to give more time for employers to return to negotiations.
